Chris Henderson

Chris currently serves as an elder for the New Antioch Church of Christ.  He holds degrees in mathematics and math education as well as ancient history. His focus centers around number theory, mathematical logic, and analysis.  He is an instructor and writer of mathematics and has been a lead speaker at several regional and national conferences. He also frequently teaches Bible classes and has spoken for several congregations. His interests include apologetics, Biblical criticism, travel, old books, and spending as much time as possible with grandchildren.  He and Diane have been married for almost 46 years and have two grown children and three grandchildren.

A Little Light Reading

It happens to the best of us. We run out of ideas to say, out of illustrations, or out 
of anecdotes. Call it writer’s block or a “senior moment.” We’ve all experienced that time when we just lose the words to express ourselves. This is especially true when trying to write something that will be presented orally. So, what do we do then? Often, a person turns to the dictionary and begins reciting the definition of a topical word or phrase. But have we ever thought about the people who wrote dictionaries? Who did they turn to and how did they draft a definition?…

Baa Baa Black Sheep…

There is an old joke about two hikers in the woods who come upon a bear. As the bear started to growl and move toward them, one of the hikers stopped to make sure his shoes were laced up good and tight. The other hiker looked around at him and said, “you know you’re never going to outrun that bear.” “I don’t have to”, the second one replied, “all I have to do is to outrun you!” This story has been told so many times it has ceased to be humorous. Yet, this is precisely how we are told that nature, as we know it, has come into being.

The Mountains are Calling…

I must admit I was excited.  It had been a year since I had seen them.   I could have told you that I was near even if I had been blindfolded.    I anticipated the moment when the SUV would reach the crest of a hill, and they would begin to fill the view.  Then, majestically, and wonderfully, there they were: the Smokey Mountains.  This wasn’t just a vacation, rather it was a pilgrimage.  The mountains were there; sentries, and I was immersed in a deepening realization that, for them, man’s sense of time is meaningless.  They beckon us to come and learn about ourselves and to marvel in mute silence at their dignity and magnificence…

If Charlotte Picked a Word for Atheists

I will never forget.  It was in fourth grade.  I can’t seem to remember much else during that school year, but I can close my eyes and return to the exact seat I occupied when the teacher first opened the book.  Fourth grade boys aren’t particularly interested in fanciful stories…but this one was different.  It was a Monday afternoon in the Fall when we first heard the words “Where’s Papa going with that ax?  said Fern to her mother as they were setting the table for breakfast.”  Over the next four days, the story of Charlotte’s Web was opened up for us…
