Science and the Bible
A common misconception is that the Scientific Revolution of the 16th and 17th centuries was an effort to separate learning from religion. While it is true that during this time what we call modern science began to immerge, many of the scientific leaders had a strong sincere belief in God. Up until then, science was largely based on ancient Greek philosophy, which was upheld by the Catholic Church. Rather than completely rejecting God, an emphasis began to develop centered around understanding His creation using thoughtful questioning, close examination, and empirical methods. But how is this to be harmonized with the Bible? Can this even be possible? Can the two be compatible? The answers begin to develop when we first understand that the Bible was never intended to be a science textbook. Likewise, the very mechanics of modern science are completely incapable of answering questions of a spiritual nature.

There is an old joke about two hikers in the woods who come upon a bear. As the bear started to growl and move toward them, one of the hikers stopped to make sure his shoes were laced up good and tight. The other hiker looked around at him and said, “you know you’re never going to outrun that bear.” “I don’t have to”, the second one replied, “all I have to do is to outrun you!” This story has been told so many times it has ceased to be humorous. Yet, this is precisely how we are told that nature, as we know it, has come into being.

I can’t seem to remember much else during that school year, but I can close my eyes and return to the exact seat I occupied when the teacher first opened the book. Fourth grade boys aren’t particularly interested in fanciful stories…but this one was different. It was a Monday afternoon in the Fall when we first heard the words “Where’s Papa going with that ax? said Fern to her mother as they were setting the table for breakfast.” Over the next four days, the story of Charlotte’s Web was opened up for us…
